TCK’s and Expats
Where are you from?
Life as a third culture kid can be really tough; when even the question “where are you from?” is stressful to answer. Fitting in nowhere and everywhere, globally nomadic life feels disruptive and dissatisfying.
You’ve left the place you last called “home”, but this is not the exciting adventure you were expecting. You feel confused and helpless, you’re arguing with your partner and your children are suffering.
You and your family may feel…
Helpless: “I am trying to raise my children with no support system”
Confused: “How can I support my children in a foreign place where I don’t think anyone shares my values?”
Angry: “I am so angry with my parents. Why did we have to move again?”
Anxious: “I can’t stop thinking about my children leaving home”
Lonely: “I have friends all over the world but nobody to have coffee with today”
Scared: “IDoes following my career mean I’ll never have a long term home?”
Depressed: “Life is just passing me by. I don’t think I’ll ever be happy”
Unsettled: “The only place I feel at home is at the airport”
Guilty: “We’ve moved because of me, and everyone else is unhappy”
Living as an expat means compromise, and lots of it. You’re feeling lonely and don’t know where to turn. Your family at home can’t help, your friends are spread around the globe and you don’t want to tell your new friends or work colleagues that you’re struggling. You fear that your adventures around the world are just your way of running away from problems.
Whether you need support as an individual, as part of a couple or as a family, you’ll learn that your feelings around being a third culture nomad are real and valid.
As a family system therapist and habitual expat, I am very well placed to help you get through the challenges you are currently facing.
I offer a safe and supportive place to talk and sessions tailored to you. With the work we do together, you’ll all feel more able explore your new location, meet new people, settle in to new schools, embrace your new culture and even feel more confident with a new language.

“It is a bitter-sweet thing, knowing two cultures. Once you leave your birthplace nothing is ever the same.” ― Sarah Turnbull, Almost French: Love and a New Life in Paris
